Helping Large Corporations be Sustainable in 8 Easy Steps

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

Sustainability is a hot topic in our world today. Unfortunately it has become a politically charged realm and it is difficult to make any headway in actually solving the problems that exist in this sphere.

During a class I took a few semesters ago focused on Corporate Social Innovation and Responsibility, I developed an idea for solving problem of the large amount of waste that consumers use on a daily basis.

This idea regarding sustainability is a program that would either cater directly to the large ecommerce companies (like Amazon, Walmart, or Target or to delivery companies (like USPS, FedEx, or UPS). As you read the different elements of this idea, you can imagine how these two types of companies could adapt strategies to fit this need.

The problem this idea addresses is helping these types of companies to be more innovative and sustainable through increasing their customer’s access to recycling. Although I have given this a lot more thought, the idea can be boiled down to a few simple steps:

1. Companies deliver packages to consumers like normal.

2. Consumers take their products and leave the boxes and packaging on their doorstep (perhaps in a special container).

3. When the delivery driver comes by to deliver packages on a predetermined day, they take all the recyclable boxes and load them in their vehicle.

4. The company recycles the boxes to make more boxes and packaging for future use.

5. The consumers get some form of monetary benefit from the company based on how much they recycled.

6. Due to the internal recycling process, the company creates greater sustainability for themselves and they consume less raw materials.

7. This leads to better customer satisfaction and greater publicity for the company.
